Learn Spanish and Mexican culture in Queretaro Mexico
Queretaro is a Mexican state in central Mexico, just south of Mexico City. It is also the name of the capital
city. Although the captital is formaly called Santiago de Queretaro, residents refer to it as simply Queretaro.
Colonial Queretaro maintained the original tight and twisting alleys of its old Indian quarter alongside the
16th century geometric street plan of the Spaniard conquerors. The Otomi, Tarasco and Chichimeca
indigenous tribes lived peacefully with the Spaniards in the old town through the 17th and 18th centuries, when
many outstanding civil and religious structures were built. Then in the 19th century, quiet
Queretaro found itself in the midst of Mexico’s struggle for independence.
Some of the highlights of Queretaro are the aqueduct arches and the historical center rich with colonial architecture. There
are also many breathtaking hotels and a wide variety of restaurants serving local and international dishes. Near the capital, about
an hour's drive, you will encounter Peña de Bernal, a popular tourist destination. The small tourist town is built around
one of the world's largest solid rock foundations that is climbed by thousands of people, Mexicans and visitors, each year.
Due to it's historical, cultural, and artistic depth, Queretaro enjoys the highest tourism traffic outside of the popular
coastal destinations. If you are looking to explore Mexico beyond the beaches, then you definately should give Queretaro a try.
You won't regret it.
